What to do outside the gym to maximize your results

Muscles Grow Outside the Gym

Working out creates tiny tears in your muscle fibers. Growth and strength gains happen when your body repairs those tears during rest. Without proper recovery, you're just breaking down muscle without giving it time to rebuild stronger.

Sleep Is Non-Negotiable

Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night. Growth hormone is released during deep sleep, which is essential for muscle repair. Poor sleep also increases cortisol (a stress hormone) which can impair recovery and promote fat storage.

Protein Is Your Friend

Protein provides the building blocks (amino acids) your muscles need to repair and grow. A simple guideline: aim for 0.7-1g of protein per pound of body weight daily. Good sources include chicken, fish, eggs, Greek yogurt, tofu, and protein shakes.

Stay Hydrated

Dehydration impairs performance and recovery. Drink water throughout the day, not just during workouts. A simple rule: if your urine is light yellow, you're well hydrated. Drink extra on training days.

Rest Days Are Training Days

Rest days aren't lazy days — they're essential. Take at least 1-2 full rest days per week. You can still stay active with light walking, stretching, or yoga. Avoid training the same muscle group on consecutive days — give each group at least 48 hours between sessions.
